Doris “Jeanne” Spoerl

Doris “Jeanne” Spoerl

Doris “Jeanne” Spoerl, age 71, of Sherrill, IA, completed her earthly journey on June 8, 2024, at the University of Iowa Hospital, while surrounded by her loving family.  To honor Jeanne’s life, her memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m., on Saturday, June 22, 2024, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, 5350 Sherrill Road, with Rev. Jesse Cearlock and Rev. Larry Langer officiating.  Family and friends are invited to join in fellowship for one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday, and from 3:00-7:00 p.m., on Friday, June 21, 2024, at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church in Sherrill.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Jeanne’s family.

Jeanne was born on March 24, 1953, in Dubuque, IA, a daughter to Paul and Marie (Leslein) Mueller.  She lived an abundantly full life filled with family, music and sewing. Jeanne was united in marriage to her soul-mate, Ronnie Spoerl, on July 17, 1976, at the Sherrill United Church of Christ. They faced each day together in united accord and their devotion to one another was an inspiration to all who knew and loved them.  Jeanne graduated from Dubuque Hempstead and earned her Bachelors Degree in Music from the University of Iowa. She was the church organist at St. Matthew’s since 1976, sang in the Dubuque Chorale for many years and played for many weddings and funerals. Jeanne savored every opportunity she was given to bring joy to others through the art of music whenever possible.  Jeanne was also a very talented seamstress and proudly ran the Country Tailor for many years where she was an integral part of numerous wedding dress alterations and could create anything with her needle and thread. After several years with Bishop’s Buffet and Northwest Fabrics, Jeanne went to work for Medline Industries where she gave of herself for over 20 years serving as a dedicated service representative for our medical community. Jeanne’s life had one clearly defined aspect to it; giving of herself for the benefit of others.

Jeanne enjoyed traveling whenever possible. She made two overseas trips with the Dubuque Chorale to England and Australia and traveled with her husband to many places after he retired from dairy farming, from their farm in Sherrill, IA. Jeanne also volunteered her time on the Dubuque County Fair Board for several years.  Jeanne loved to bake. She spent countless hours in the kitchen at Christmas time baking dozens of cookies and breads for the church cookie walk or to send to her sales representatives at Medline. But, at the end of the day, having her family by her side, especially the “grandkids” was where her heart always desired to be.  Jeanne’s love had no end and could brighten your day simply by being her giving self. We will treasure every beautiful memory and lesson which she leaves behind for us now, until we all meet again. May the choirs in Heaven make a joyful noise!

I was blessed to have a wonderful cousin named Jeanne. She was bright, cheery and loving and always interested in family. She was extremely talented in music, always ready to share her beautiful voice, and an extraordinary seamstress. She helped me with my wedding dress and made my veil for me in 1993. She was an exceptional family member and I am so grateful to have had her in my life.

  2. Diane Mc Cabe Weyer says:

I met Jeanne in the fall of 1971. My roommate, Becky Hubbard, and I were across the hall from Jeanne and her roommate in Burge Hall, at the University of Iowa. Jeanne and Becky became fast friends as they were both music majors and had several classes together. I tagged along as a business major. We were there to watch as Jeanne fell in love with Ronnie. And, we were blessed to stand up with them at their wedding. The last time I saw Jeanne was at Becky’s funeral in the fall of 2022. Jeanne and Becky would always come down the hall in the dorm singing at the top of their lungs! And, I know they are doing the same in Heaven! Until we meet again, Dear Friends. Love, McCabey

I am so terribly sorry for your loss! I was shocked to receive this news much too early in her life! Please know how greatly I appreciated her as a special cousin who always had time to share things with me, whether it was during Vacation Bible School work (which we both loved), catching up about family news, helping my daughter, Stephanie, learn to sew and guiding her in 4-H, doing sewing alterations for me and my family and her offers to help! Jeanne will be greatly missed here on earth. The Lord has called her home to be with Him in heaven! I will miss her! Please know that I will be praying for you all!
I will also miss seeing you at the funeral as I am 8 hours away, but I will definitely be with you in spirit and prayer!
Love from the Lord be with you!
    Betty (Koethe) Welu
