Lyle L. “Ossie” Smith

Lyle L. “Ossie” Smith, age 92, of Dubuque, IA, completed his earthly journey on October 3, 2024, at Luther Manor.  To honor Lyle’s life, a private family burial will be held at the Asbury Cemetery in Asbury, IA.  The Tri-State Cremation Center is humbly serving Lyle’s family.

Lyle was born on April 25, 1932, in Dubuque, IA, a son to August “Gus” and Freda (Launspach) Smith.  He honorably served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean War and eventually married the love of his life, Margie E. Muntz as their life together and memories would begin.  Lyle was a poultry inspector for the majority of his life, but raising his family on the farm was his true passion.  Not a day went by where Lyle didn’t take in all that life had to offer and while tending to the daily chores of the farm, if some hunting, or wood cutting season was upon us, Lyle was always satisfied and grateful for the opportunities. 

Lyle was also a history buff and studied the stories that make us who we are continually. He also invested his time with the Masonic Lodge and the Lions Club throughout his life and made many friends along the way.  Lyle was a good and decent man who strived to care for his family, his friends, and his community whenever he could.  His humble and simple approach to life was apparent to all who knew and loved him and the love and lessons he leaves behind now will surely be treasured for generations to come.  We will miss Lyle dearly as we face this new reality without his physical presence among us, but we find peace in knowing that he is now free from his earthly health battles and we possess the wonderful legacy he built for us to lean into as we make our way though this life as well.  Thank you, Lyle, for leading by example and teaching us so many important lessons so effortlessly.  May the Lord bless you and keep you in His loving arms until we all meet again.

Lyle was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Lyle L. Smith, Jr; his son-in-law, Collin Pfeiler; and his siblings, Fern Smith, Ethel (Harold) Butlett, Robert Smith, Ruth “Peach” (Lawrence) Beecher, and Ira “Tony” (Enid) Smith.

Lyle’s family would like to thank the nurses and staff at Luther Manor and Hospice of Dubuque for all of their professional and compassionate care.
